Gear Up for Adventure: Essential Backpacking Gear

Updated: Apr 10

Are you someone who thrives on exploring the great outdoors, whether it be on foot or by bike? If so, then you understand the importance of having the right gear to make your adventures safer, more comfortable, and ultimately more enjoyable. At "It's a Beauty Day for a Beauty Day," we are all about equipping ourselves with the essential backpacking and bikepacking gear to tackle any trail or terrain that comes our way.

When gearing up for an outdoor adventure, preparation is key. Whether you're planning a multi-day backpacking trip through the rugged terrain of the Sierra Nevada or along a series of scenic coastal routes, having the right equipment can make all the difference. Here are some essential items that you should consider adding to your gear list:

  1. Backpack: A durable, well-fitted backpack is essential for carrying all your gear and supplies. While REI is a great place to start, if you're like me and have chronic back or neck issues, I would HIGHLY recommend checking out ULA. Hands down the most comfortable pack in my opinion, and they have the BEST customer service.

  2. Shelter: A lightweight tent is crucial for providing shelter and protection from the elements while camping out in the wilderness. I have the Nemo Hornet and LOVE it.

  3. Sleeping Bag: Choose a sleeping bag that is appropriate for the weather conditions you'll be facing. Down vs. synthetic is a HUGE topic in the outdoor world. I have a synthetic bag for when I know conditions will be wet, but I primarily use my Enlightened Equipment down quilt. Overall, just look for one that is lightweight, compact, and offers good insulation.

  4. Cooking Gear: A portable stove, fuel, cookware, and utensils are essential for preparing meals and boiling water while out on the trail. I carry an MSR stove, a TOAKs titanium pot, and long titanium spork (all the best to dig into those delicious freeze dried bags of deliciousness!).

  5. Navigation Tools: I'm old school (30 going on 80), so I suggest always having a map and compass on hand in case your GPS/ phone loses battery. Navigation tools are crucial for staying on course and navigating through unfamiliar terrain.

  6. First Aid Kit: I find most people really overdo this, but you should always have a mindfully made first aid kit on hand for treating minor injuries and ailments while on the go.

  7. Lighting: A headlamp is essential for navigating in the dark and setting up camp after sunset.

  8. Hydration/Water Purification System: Depending on water availability on the trail, I use up to two smart water bottles as the heads the connect perfectly with the Sawyer Squeeze. I have the regular Sawyer Squeeze, but I have friends with the Mini who love it as well.

  9. Clothing: Pack lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing that can be layered for changing weather conditions. My best advice is that you need less than you think you need! I usually bring one hiking outfit, two pairs of socks, two underwear(s?), and sleep leggings, plus a lightweight rain jacket, a puff (love my Arcteryx!), and trail runners as my hikers. By equipping yourself with the right gear, you can be fully prepared to take on any outdoor adventure that comes your way! Everyone has different bodies with different needs, so make sure to do YOUR research. Stay safe, wild, and weird, and you'll be sure to have an epic adventure!
